Italiens justitieminister, Andrea Orlando:

Another point that we worked on this morning concerns the protection of personal data.  We have laid the ground for an agreement because we looked at part of the whole regulation that we could agree on and we also had a discussion on the ‘right to be forgotten’. There were different points of views expressed but again we laid the ground for future work to be done in this area.”

As the minister said, there were two big issues to day. First of all data protection. Let me congratulate the Italian presidency on concluding discussions on Chapter 4. I think we have taken a big step forward with the view to getting Minister Orlando to reach agreements on the text as a whole in December. That’s certainly what I very much hope myself. The other big issue was the right to be forgotten. Again I think there was a very interesting exchange of views. My conclusion from that would be that the text put forward by the commission meets all of the points raised by the court in its ruling, but I think the time has come now for us to take one step further so that citizens and companies can benefit from a clear legal framework, offering data protection at European level. We need to have our own system for that.”
